Not every level exists for every subject, and the AI and automation apprenticeships that are available differ in who they’re designed for. Here’s how the main levels apply to AI.
Level 3 AI apprenticeships
Broadly equivalent to A Levels
Level 3 apprenticeships in data and digital (such as data technician roles) give a foundation in working with data and digital tools. They suit people early in their career or in junior support roles who want a first step into data and AI-adjacent work. They’re more foundational than the Level 4 practitioner route.
Level 4 AI & Automation Practitioner
Broadly equivalent to a Higher National Certificate or the first year of a degree
This is the sweet spot for most people already in work. The Level 4 AI & Automation Practitioner apprenticeship (standard ST1512) teaches you to use AI and automation to improve real business processes, no coding or degree required. It’s designed for existing staff in roles like administration, operations, HR, customer service and marketing, and it runs for around 14 months plus an end-point assessment.
If your goal is to apply AI practically in your job and gain a nationally recognised qualification while keeping your salary, this is the level to look at.
Level 6 AI apprenticeships
Broadly equivalent to a bachelor’s degree
Level 6 apprenticeships (such as digital and technology solutions or data science degree apprenticeships) are degree-level programmes for more specialist and technical roles. They usually involve deeper technical and mathematical content and a bigger time commitment. They suit people aiming at dedicated technical careers rather than applying AI within an existing business role.
Level 7 AI apprenticeships
Broadly equivalent to a master’s degree
Level 7 is master’s-level study for senior, strategic or expert roles. Note that government funding for Level 7 apprenticeships was withdrawn for older apprentices from 2026, so funding availability is more limited at this level. For most people looking to build and apply AI skills at work, Level 4 offers the practical skills without the master’s-level commitment.
The short answer for most people: if you’re employed and want to use AI and automation in your day-to-day role without a coding or degree background, the Level 4 AI & Automation Practitioner is almost certainly the right level. It’s practical, fully funded for eligible learners, and designed for exactly this.
How to choose the right level
